Throw Back Thursday from way back in 1997! This was an acrylic painting that I painted when I was taking art classes at Terra Rosa Studio. I learned so many things with this painting:
1. Acrylic paint can be thinned down and used almost like watercolors (note the yellow flower for instance).
2. Just because the paper seems white, doesn't mean painting over mistakes with white paint will solve everything, especially over time. :)
3. Mixing complementary colors, or choosing a deeper color like purple really does make for better shadow colors than just using black (note the pineapple stem).
4. Hurrying to finish can make for a sloppy looking result (the fruit of the pineapple and the purple flower especially).
My favorite part of this entire piece is the top of the pineapple stem foliage. I can tell I was really looking at how it works, and how the leaves bent.
You can learn something from every painting and drawing you do. This is something I need to remind myself daily. I often feel this pressure that every painting I do needs to be gallery worthy. Instead I should assess what I've learned and find the value in the experience.
I hope you have had a great thursday.
